Welcome to this blog where we will explore how the mind works in sleep to assess and solve creative, personal and career problems. “Sleep On It” is a common phrase in many languages: “La nuit porte conseille,” “La notte porta consiglio,” are two of my favorites. Few people have lived very long without spontaneously solving a problem in their dreams or sleep. You may have awakened with a vivid dream that immediately answered your question, or with a complicated one that left you puzzled…. Then…! ….Well, where do you think those early morning or steamy shower ideas come from?
Your mind works actively every night reviewing what you learned the day before and working out new points of view and solutions to the problems you face. To fully harvest all that mental labor however, one must learn the language of dreams–visual metaphor. Once you learn to put into words the visual images of your dreams, your waking mind is much quicker at catching on to the parallels in your waking situation. By example, and by the presentation of the Dream Interview method, this site will help you get to the very personal, very practical meanings and solutions in your dreams.
What you will not find here is a focus on the paranormal, new age, and dogmatic or superstitious dimensions of dreaming. We shall focus all our energies on using the products of our sleeping brain to improve our insight and abilities to assess and solve life’s personal, professional, and creative issues.
We shall use the Dream Interview method to explore the meanings and uses of Common Dream Themes, Nightmares, and Common Images. And in so doing, you will see that even the most common of dreams, say, of Flying, or of Being Chased, or of Being Naked in Public, or of Making Love to an Unexpected Partner can mean wildly different things to different people—or to the same dreamer at different times in his or her life.
The very personal nature of dream images means that it is Impossible and, I think, unethical to attempt to interpret others’ dreams without actually interviewing them. So please resist the temptation to send me your own dreams in hopes of an automated (and worthless) interpretation. However, I would love it if you would send me your questions about dreams and your suggestions for pieces on the types of dreams and images that puzzle you. Of course, thoughtful, polite, and engaging comments and discussion on the posts and pages you find here would be equally welcome!
What I can offer you in this blog is a methodical interview process, tailored to your type of dream or dream image, that will show you how to interview yourself, your clients, or students that will help you understand what the sleeping mind has been trying to get the dreamer to see. On the publications page, you will find books that I have written to teach in detail the Dream Interview method as well as a method for incubating dreams, or “Sleeping On It.”
If you would like to work or train with me in person or via Skype, or if you would like to schedule a workshop or lecture, send an email and we’ll get started!
